Part 1 of the C2 Proficient (CPE) Paper is called ‘Multiple Choice Cloze‘. You read a text with eight gaps and choose the best word from four options to fit each gap.
Essential tips:
- Read each text quickly to understand its general meaning before you attempt the task.
- The gapped word or phrase may be part of a fixed expression, collocation or phrasal verb, or it may be a discourse marker that affects the meaning of the text as a whole.
- Check the words before and after the gap carefully to decide what type of word you are looking for.
- Once you have finished the task, read the whole text again to check that your choices make sense in the text as a whole.

Soap operas
It is surely beyond dispute that soap opera is the most consistently popular type of television programme in the world. It has succeeded in the imagination of millions since it first as a genre back in the 1930s. The word ‛soap’ alludes to the role originally played by detergent manufacturers, who promoted their products during commercial breaks. Soap operas have been as mindless entertainment, with viewers only to these programmes in order to escape from reality.

Being a relatively soft rock, kimberlite commonly erodes faster than the surrounding country rock and often is covered by thin layers of soil and regolith derived from adjacent rock .
A brief history of the mall
Standardized shopping malls have become the new Main Streets of the USA according to one on the subject. Along with antibiotics and personal computers, the shopping mall has been as one of the top 50 wonders that have revolutionized the lives of people today. But shopping malls didn’t just happen out of the blue.
The mall was originally of as a community center where people would for shopping, cultural activity, and social interaction. It is safe to that the mall has achieved and surpassed those early expectations. The first enclosed mall was developed in a suburb of Minneapolis in 1956 and was designed to get the shopper out of the harsh weather.
The phenomenal growth and development of shopping centers was a natural of the migration of population out from the cities and the growth of the use of the automobile. The success and impact of the shopping mall may have something to do with their potential to community life.

- When you have finished, read the text again with the words inserted to check that it makes sense.
Tips:
Nothing prepares you for this test better than reading. Read a lot. Candidates who often read in English (for work, for fun) find this part of the test manageable, while those who never read tend to find it very hard.
If you are 100% sure that two of the 4 choices are completely identical, then neither can be the answer. There is always only one word that fits grammatically and has the right meaning.
